The Restoration Process

These three stages are commonly used in stone floor restoration, though not every project requires all of them. In many cases, a single step may be sufficient to restore the surface, while more severely damaged, uneven or stained floors may require multiple steps, and in some instances, certain stages may need to be repeated to achieve the desired finish.

Grinding

Purpose: Heavy surface removal.

What happens: Coarse diamond abrasives (e.g., 30–70 grit) are used to level uneven tiles, remove deep scratches, lippage (edge height differences), stains, and etching.

Result: Flat, smooth surface with a dull, matte finish, ready for finer refinement.

Tools: Planetary floor grinder or rotary machine with metal-bond diamond tooling.

When used: Major restoration or floor levelling.

Honing

Purpose: Surface refinement.

What happens: Progressively finer diamond abrasives (e.g., 100–800 grit) smooth the ground surface, removing visible scratch marks left from grinding.

Result: Satin or matte finish. Clean, uniform, non-glossy.

Tools: Rotary or planetary machine with resin-bond diamond pads.

When used: After grinding or for light restoration without full resurfacing.

Polishing

Purpose: Final finish enhancement.

What happens: Very fine abrasives (e.g., 1,500–3,000+ grit) and/or polishing powders chemically and mechanically bring up a reflective sheen.

Result: Gloss or semi-gloss finish depending on grit and product used.

Tools: Floor polisher or burnisher with high-grit diamonds or polishing compounds.

When used: Final stage for decorative or high-end finishes.
