Travertine Floor Restoration in Chichester, West Sussex

Repairing and Restoring a Worn Travertine Floor to a Smooth, Even Finish

Travertine flooring is a popular feature in homes across Chichester due to its natural texture and warm, earthy tones. However, as a porous natural stone, travertine can become worn, uneven and stained over time, particularly in high-traffic areas such as kitchens and hallways.

We were recently contacted by a homeowner in Chichester, West Sussex who required professional travertine floor restoration after their kitchen floor had become dull, damaged and difficult to maintain.

The Problem

The travertine floor had been installed several years earlier and had gradually deteriorated due to daily use and general wear.

During our initial assessment, we identified several common issues associated with travertine floors:

  • open holes where the original filler had worn away

  • dirt and grime trapped within the porous surface

  • staining across high-use areas

  • a dull, uneven finish across the floor

The floor lacked consistency, and the natural beauty of the travertine had been lost.

The homeowner was concerned that the damage might be permanent and that the floor was no longer salvageable.

Our Assessment

After a detailed inspection, we confirmed that the floor was structurally sound and suitable for full travertine floor restoration.

We explained that using specialist travertine cleaning, repair and sealing techniques, we could:

  • refill holes and restore a consistent surface

  • remove embedded dirt and reduce staining

  • smooth and refine the finish of the stone

  • enhance the natural colour and appearance

Importantly, restoration would achieve this without the cost and disruption of replacing the flooring.

The Restoration Process

To restore the floor, we carried out a full travertine floor restoration process using professional stone restoration equipment.

Deep Cleaning

The first stage involved a thorough deep clean using specialist stone cleaning solutions.

These products are designed to penetrate the pores of the travertine and break down dirt, grease and residues that have built up over time.

Using professional equipment, we removed embedded dirt from both the surface of the tiles and the grout lines, immediately improving the appearance of the floor.

Filling and Repairs

One of the defining characteristics of travertine is its naturally occurring holes, which are typically filled during installation.

Over time, this filler can wear away, leaving the surface uneven.

We carefully refilled these holes using a colour-matched resin to restore a smooth and consistent surface across the floor.

Grinding & Honing

We then used diamond abrasives to refine the surface of the stone.

This process removes minor surface imperfections and evens out the finish, creating a smooth and uniform appearance across the entire floor.

Multiple passes were carried out using progressively finer abrasives to achieve the desired result.

Sealing

Once the floor had been fully restored and allowed to dry, we applied a high-quality impregnating sealer.

This protects the travertine from future staining and moisture while enhancing the natural colour of the stone.

Sealing also makes the floor easier to clean and maintain over time.

The Result

The transformation was significant.

After restoration:

  • open holes were filled and the surface became smooth and consistent

  • embedded dirt and staining were dramatically reduced

  • the natural tones of the travertine were restored

  • the floor appeared cleaner, brighter and more refined

The kitchen space was completely improved, with the floor once again becoming a feature of the room.

The homeowner was extremely pleased with the result and commented that the floor looked “like it had been completely renewed”.

Most importantly, they avoided the cost and disruption of replacing the flooring.
