Commercial Granite Floor Restoration at a Grade II Listed Wedding Venue in West Sussex
Restoring 1,400m²+ of Internal and External Granite Flooring at a Historic Events Venue
Granite is a popular choice for prestigious commercial properties thanks to its durability, timeless appearance and ability to withstand heavy foot traffic. But even granite dulls, scratches, and stains over time — particularly in busy venues hosting weddings, corporate functions, and private events year-round.
We were recently commissioned to carry out a large-scale granite floor restoration at a Grade II listed wedding and events venue in West Sussex. The property features extensive granite flooring across its ground floor, reception areas, entrance halls and function spaces. As well as external terraces used for outdoor ceremonies and drinks receptions.
As a heritage property operating as a busy commercial venue, the project demanded careful planning, sympathetic restoration techniques and flexible scheduling to keep disruption to an absolute minimum.
The Problem
Despite significant ongoing investment in the building and grounds, years of constant use had taken their toll on the granite flooring. Our initial survey identified:
widespread dullness and loss of shine across the internal floors, most noticeably in the reception and function areas
scratching and abrasion in high-traffic walkways, caused by grit tracked in on footwear
a build-up of cleaning product residues, which had left a hazy film that ordinary mopping could no longer shift
staining, weathering and organic growth (algae and lichen) on the external terraces
a patchy, inconsistent appearance between different areas of the property
The flooring plays a major role in the guest experience — particularly during weddings, where the entrance hall and reception spaces feature prominently in photography. Venue management wanted the floors brought back to a standard befitting the property, without compromising its historic character.

Our Assessment
A detailed survey confirmed that the granite was structurally sound throughout, with no loose slabs, failed joints or subfloor issues — making it an ideal candidate for restoration rather than replacement.
Because the building is Grade II listed, we proposed a fully mechanical restoration process using diamond abrasives and pH-neutral, breathable treatments. This approach is non-invasive and sympathetic to historic stone: no aggressive chemicals, no film-forming coatings, and nothing that would trap moisture within the fabric of the building.
Given the venue's busy events calendar, we also developed a phased restoration programme built around existing bookings, with works scheduled during quieter midweek periods, evenings and selected weekends. This meant weddings, private events and day-to-day operations could continue uninterrupted.
The Restoration Process
The work was completed in carefully managed phases, allowing each area of the property to remain in use while restoration progressed elsewhere. Floors were handed back fully cured and ready for foot traffic at the start of each operating day.
1. Deep Cleaning
All granite surfaces were first deep-cleaned using specialist pH-neutral stone-cleaning solutions and rotary scrubbing equipment. This removed embedded dirt, grease, surface staining and — crucially — the layers of old cleaning product residue that had built up over years of routine maintenance. This stage alone produced a visible improvement and ensured the diamond abrasives could work directly on clean stone.
2. Grinding & Honing
Using rotary grinding machines fitted with diamond abrasives, we then refined the internal floors through a sequence of progressively finer grits. The coarser stages removed surface scratches, minor lippage and the worn, traffic-damaged top layer of stone; the finer honing stages produced a smooth, uniform surface ready for polishing. All grinding was carried out with vacuum dust extraction, keeping the process clean and suitable for an operational venue.
Particular care was taken in the main reception and event spaces, where an even, consistent finish across large open areas was essential.
3. Granite Polishing
The honed surfaces were then polished using fine-grit diamond pads to restore the stone's natural clarity, colour depth and mirror-like reflectivity. Because the shine is achieved mechanically from the stone itself — rather than applied as a coating — the finish is hard-wearing and authentic to the original material.
The transformation in how both natural and artificial light interact with the floors noticeably brightened the interior spaces.
4. External Granite Restoration
The external terraces and entrance areas required a different approach. Years of weather exposure and organic growth had left these surfaces tired, discoloured and uneven.
Following deep cleaning and surface refinement, these areas were finished to a honed standard (rather than highly polished). This restored a clean, consistent appearance while deliberately retaining the surface texture needed for safe slip resistance outdoors, an important consideration for a venue hosting guests in all weathers.
5. Sealing & Protection
Finally, a high-performance impregnating sealer was applied throughout. Unlike surface coatings, an impregnating sealer penetrates the stone and works invisibly within it, protecting against staining, moisture ingress and everyday wear while remaining fully breathable, essential in a listed building.
The sealed floors are now easier to maintain: routine cleaning with a pH-neutral product is all that's required to keep them looking their best.
The Result
The transformation across the venue was substantial.
internal granite regained its deep, polished appearance, with scratches and wear removed rather than masked
reception and function areas now appear noticeably brighter and more prestigious
external terraces look clean and consistent while remaining safely slip-resistant
the whole ground floor presents as one cohesive, well-maintained space
Venue management were delighted with the results and particularly appreciated the phased programme, which allowed events to continue throughout. Just as importantly, restoration delivered this transformation at a fraction of the cost and disruption of replacing the flooring, an option that would have been highly problematic in a listed building in any case.
Why Restoration Works for Historic Commercial Venues
Historic venues face a unique challenge: preserving the property's character while maintaining a flawless standard of presentation for paying guests. Professional granite restoration meets both demands by reviving the original stone without replacement, using methods sympathetic to heritage buildings, and scheduling around a live events calendar.
